‘Most people think it can’t happen to them’
In the past year, North Bay police have investigated 100 cases of fraud in the city and Callander.
The victims have lost about $500,000.
It doesn’t sound like a lot of victims, but according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, only about five per cent of fraud is reported.
“It’s fear, shame, embarrassment,” Acting Sgt. Jeff Thomson of the RCMP at the centre based in North Bay, says.
