COLUMN: Fishermen should know how to swim
I was sad to hear that three commercial fisherman had drowned in two separate incidents in the waters around my old stomping grounds in northern Newfoundland this summer.
The latest happened last week when a squid fisherman in a boat loaded down to the gunnels with squid capsized just 200 feet from the wharf he was heading to so he could unload his catch.
Apparently, he was not wearing a life jacket and reports indicate that he didn’t know how to swim.
