Opinion: Tax evasion should be as stigmatized as drunk driving

When I started work as an accountant in Montreal in the 1970s, back when the schmata business was still going strong, I carried out many audits around Chabanel Street. Every one of those garment factories was open for direct retail sales on Saturday morning.
The fact that these sales were for cash and not reported on the books was known to the partners of the accounting firms as well as to all of the staff who worked on the audit. Many members of the public knew that they could buy “direct
