Montreal earmarks $1.3 million for cop crackdown on contraband cannabis

The city of Montreal will spend $1.3 million on the creation of a 26-member squad of police tasked exclusively with tackling the local black market for cannabis.
The city’s executive committee authorized the expense this week, noting that while recreational cannabis became legal on Oct. 17, its production and sale outside government-authorized venues remains illegal. While limited, in-home cultivation of cannabis plants is permitted in some other parts of Canada, it is forbidden in Quebec.
