Ryan Strome opened the scoring 14 minutes into the game, completing an exquisite five-way passing play to beat Antti Niemi.
Two minutes later, Connor McDavid’s 14th made it 2-0.
Edmonton had the best of the early going, as the Canadiens turned the puck over continuously and defenceman Brett Lernout went down easier than (insert metaphor, but keep it clean).
Shots were a deceptively close 12-11 Edmonton.
