Dear Mairesse Plante:
Congratulations on becoming the first woman elected as Montreal mayor — and the first major mairesse on the continent.
It was fun to see the Gazette and other English media dub you the mairesse, a title borrowed from the French language.
The English term is actually “mayoress,” used in Britain in recent years — but that has a whiff of “hostess,” “seamstress” and the dreaded “stewardess.”
