City hall to close for renovations for the first time since 1920s
Mayor Valérie Plante will, no doubt, be sure to avoid the mistakes of the last mayor to undertake a major renovation of city hall.
In 1992, then mayor Jean Doré’s $23-million revamp came to symbolize his administration’s free-spending ways in the midst of an economic downturn. The uproar over a $300,000 window in the mayor’s office and self-flushing urinals in the washrooms contributed to Doré’s defeat in 1994.
