Rushing out of the house for work, a last-minute sandwich in hand, François Gauthier walks over the wooden planks that serve as his sidewalk, his weight bending them inward where they cover gaping holes. 
Metallic fences and the occasional yellow barricade tape block off the construction work overtaking his street, creating a narrow corridor until the next intersection. 
The makeshift sidewalk is not great, Gauthier admits, but it’s not the end of the world, either.
