Melbourne's strange and splendid skyline that never was

In 1979, an international ideas competition inspired visions of Melbourne as a futuristic metropolis of lasers, glass pyramids and airborne structures, and also as a garden city, a cultural capital, an entertainment hub and a tourist destination – ideas mocked as absurd, but that provoked serious topics of identity and city-making that are still debated today.
